Shape Placement

Creativity with shapes

Instructions Printer-Friendly
Watch Video

  • Select a large sheet of construction paper to use as placemat or use purchased paper placemats
  • Give child shape stencils of circle, square, and triangle (stencils can be made or purchased (it is easier for a child to trace inside a design)
  • Let child trace stencils on placemat making designs or objects with the shapes
  • Can make shape placemats for each family member through the month

Simplify

While tracing is a necessary skill, you could just have child draw triangles, squares and circles.

Extend

Encourage child to combine the shapes to make a  figure or picture. For example,  - large circle for head, two triangles for eyes, square for a nose, and small circle for a mouth, etc.
