Following directions while practicing a shape activity

Month 12 · Activity 2 ·   Shapes

Instructions

  • Take a large sheet of plain paper and fold in half horizontally with a child
  • Fold in half again, and one more time so when you open up the paper you will have 8 sections
  • Let child draw on the folded lines with a grey crayon so they can easily see the sections
  • Have the child number the sections 1 to 8 in the upper corner of each section

Ask child to follow these directions:

  • Draw a red circle in section #3
  • Draw a black triangle in section #8
  • Draw a yellow rectangle in section #1
  • Draw an orange square in section # 4
  • Draw a green heart in section #6
  • Draw a brown oval in section #7
  • Draw a grey triangle in section #2
  • Draw a blue circle in section #5

Simplify

Have an adult prepare the paper by folding and writing the numerals 1 to 8 in each of the boxes. Prepare an identical second sheet for an adult so you can make your own example along with a child.  Help child find each section before drawing the correct shape.

Extend

If child is familiar with recognizing numerals 1 to 8, use the numerals 9 to 16 in the sections. Encourage child to fold and label the sections independently.  Give child directions by telling him two or 3 three sections to fill at a time.
