Nursery Rhyme

Star Light, Star Bright

Month 7 · Activity 26 ·   Surprise

Instructions

  • Recite the poem “Star Light”
  • Each night this month, look at the stars and recite the poem
  • Discuss the word “wish”
  • On a star-shaped paper note (cut your own or purchase), have the child give you a wish to write down
  • Keep wishes posted on a door or mirror this month

 Star Light, Star Bright

Star light, Star bright

I wish I may, I wish I might

Have the wish I wish tonight

Simplify

Write the poem on an index card and keep handy to use

When learning to memorize, repeat, and memorize one line at a time.

For example, repeat Star light, Star bright, and make sure the child has this memorized before adding the next line - I wish I may I wish I might.

Always recite and start from the beginning when adding the next line.  For example, Star light, Star bright, I wish I may I wish I might.....Star light, Star bright, I wish I may I wish I might, Have the wish I wish tonight.

Extend

Memorization is a needed skill throughout our lives.  Here is another poem to share with a child. It was written in 1895 by Gelett Burgess and is a short nonsense poem

I never saw a Purple cow,

I never hope to see one;

But I can tell you, anyhow,

I'd rather see than be one.

QUESTIONS FOR A CHILD

Can you tell me something you always want to remember and why?

Can you tell me something that you want to forget and why?

What would rather be in the sky; a cloud, a star, the moon, or the sun, and why?
