Reinforcing Number 6

Calendar activity

Instructions Printer-Friendly

  • Look at a calendar together and review any special dates - birthday or events - to put on the calendar for this month
  • Let the child find and point out the number 6 for each of the twelve months.  Have the child write the number 6 next to the 6 in each calendar month

Next:

  • Have one container of many objects - stones, shells, jelly beans, M&M’s, etc.
  • Have another container of numbered cards 1 to 6 (child can write the numbers on the cards)
  • Let the child pick a numbered card
  • Place the numbered card on a table and let child select that many objects from the container
  • Repeat for each number always encouraging the child to count aloud while handling the objects

Simplify

First, an adult draws a card and places that many objects on the card. Make an additional card by writing the same numeral on the new card and let the child place the correct number of objects on the card.  Ask the child if the cards match by having the same number of objects. Proceed in the same way until all the numbers 1 to 6 have two cards that match numerals and with the same number of objects.

Extend

Click here to download a number line or use a ruler as a number line and use a paper clip as an arrow. Ask the child to put the arrow on the different numbers. For example, say 4, and the child moves the arrow to 4. Now ask the child to tell you a number bigger than 4 and a number smaller than 4. Proceed in the same manner for all the numbers 1 to 6.

QUESTIONS FOR CHILD

Are you younger or older than 6 years old?

If you could have 6 items all the same, what would you choose?

Up Down Turn Around

(Activity 14 Month 8)

Up, down

Turn around.

Touch the sky,

And touch the ground.

Wiggle fingers

Wiggle toes

Wiggle shoulders

And say "hello"

Up, down

Turn around

Touch the sky,

And touch the ground.

Pat your belly

Blink your eyes,

Blow a kiss,

And say “good-bye “

I Need To Be Honest

(Activity 13 Month 8)

I need to be honest

  My mom and dad say

And telling the truth

  Is just one way!

Why be honest

I ask mom and dad.

You will feel your best

When the truth is always said.
