First Name

Listen to song "What's Your Name" and finding sock letters

Instructions Printer-Friendly

  • Write child’s name on paper
  • Place magnetic letters to the child’s name into a dark sock (if using all uppercase letters make sure name is written in uppercase. If possible use an upper case letter for the first letter and lower case letters for the remaining letters but.... not all magnetic letters are made that way)
  • Let the child draw out one letter and match to letter in his name on the paper
  • Continue until all letters are placed correctly on written name
  • Listen to the song " What's Your Name" by Mike Soloway or watch video here

Simplify

With a child, place the first two letters of the child's name in the sock.  Let the child select one letter from the sock and place it on the correct letter of his name on the paper. Now, let the child select the remaining letter from the sock and place it on the correct letter in his name.  Continue to add the next 2 letters at a time to the sock from the child's name until the complete name is spelled out.

Extend

Let the child write his own name on the paper to match with the magnetic letters - watch for upper and lower case letters.

Place the letters of the child's last name in the sock and make a matching paper using the last name.

QUESTIONS FOR CHILD

Tell me about someone who also has your name. Someone in a book, a movie, a friend, etc.

What is the difference between your first and last name?
