Reinforcing #4
Counting and grouping food
Month 4 · Activity 7 · Numbers
Instructions
- Place a handful of four different types of food - grapes, raisins, pretzels, cereal, etc. on the table
- Let the child count aloud and remove four of each type of food
Simplify
Have an adult make a group of four items - pretzels; and then let the child make a matching set of four pretzels. Continue to make a set of four with different items and let the child make a matching set.
Extend
Here is an easy way to introduce addition. When a child has made one set of four items (for example grapes) let them make another set of four items (for example raisins). Let them count aloud how many food items are in both sets. Four plus four would be eight items. Put together sets of different food items and count aloud
QUESTIONS FOR CHILD
Why do we need to eat food?
What is your favorite taste - salty, sweet, sour, or spicy? Can you name a food that has this taste? Why do you like this taste?
