A counting and memory activity

Instructions

  • Have a child pretend to get ready for guests invited for dinner. There will be seven guests. Encourage the child to count aloud while gathering the plates, knives, spoons, forks, and napkins. When placing the utensils on the table at the place settings have the child count aloud.
  • Ask the child to place seven plates on the table (paper or plastic).
  • Ask the child to place seven knives (regular silverware/plastic) on the table next to each plate on the right side - one for each guest
  • Ask the child to place seven forks (regular silverware/plastic) on the table next to each plate on the left side - one for each guest
  • Ask the child to place seven spoons (regular silverware/plastic) on the table next to the knife - one for each guest
  • Ask the child to place a napkin at each place setting

Simplify

Extend

Ask the child to take away one place setting (plate, knife, fork, spoon, napkin) and ask how many people will be sitting at the table (six)

Ask the child to take away another place setting and ask how many people will be sitting at the table (five)

Continue asking the child to take a place setting away one by one until you have zero place settings at the table
