Play a Letter Memory Game, Find "G" and "Y" animal pictures, View a glow worm and a chicken with long feathers

Month 6 · Activity 5 · Letters

Instructions

  • Make 2 matching index cards of these 6 letters - G, Y, O, U, A, E for a total of 12 cards
  • Play the Memory game
  • Mix up the cards and place facedown on a table
  • Let the child turn over 2 cards to see if they match
  • When turning the card over, encourage the child to say sound and letter name
  • When they find two matching letters, remove from the table
  • Continue taking turns until all 6 letters are matched

Next:

  • Ask the child to think of an animal that begins with the sound of "G" - gorilla, goose, gecko, goat, etc.
  • Find a picture of an animal beginning with "G" and put into a 3 ring binder behind the letter G (Easy way to find pictures is to type “Free pictures of animals” into internet search engines) or child can draw their own "G" animal
  • View a glow-worm here
  • Ask the child to think of an animal that begins with "Y" - yak, yellowjacket, Yorkshire terrier, etc.
  • Find a picture of an animal beginning with Y and put into a 3 ring binder behind the letter "Y". The child can draw their own "Y" animal
  • View a yokohama chicken with long feathers here

Simplify

When beginning to play a matching game, use cards for only two matches. Place upside down the 2 cards for G and the 2 cards for Y for a total of 4 cards.  Let the child turn over 2 cards until the two matches are found.  Next, add another set of matching cards - O.  Again, see if child can make the matches with just 3 sets of letters.  Continue until the child can successfully match all 6 cards.

Extend

Add one more card for each letter so you have 3 cards for each letter and a total of 18 cards.  In order to make a match, the child must turn over all 3 matching letter cards before they can remove from the table. This is a wonderful way to work on memory skills.
