Instructions
- Show a child the letter R and review the sound R makes
- Draw letter R on an index card with a wide glue stick. Immediately shake sand, salt, or sugar on top of the glue. Shake excess off and look at the letter R
- Look for the letter R on a cereal box, newspaper, or magazine and circle with a red marker. Find 3 letter R's to circle.
- Ask the child to think of an animal that begins with R - rabbit, reindeer, raccoon, rhinoceros, etc.
- Find a picture of an animal beginning with R and put into 3 ring binder behind the letter R (Easy way to find pictures is to type “Free pictures of animals” in internet search engine)
- Visit to see a Roseate Spoonbill pink bird
Simplify
Look for pictures of animals that begin with the letter "R" in old magazine/catalogs or child can draw his own picture of an animal
Extend
Discover together another animal that is pink in color. Ask the child how you would go about finding this animal. (pink katydid, pygmy seahorse, web-footed gecko, orchid mantis, domestic pigs, starfish or sea stars, elephant hawk moth, Amazon river dolphin...)
