Heart
Learning letters H & P
Month 8 · Activity 3 · Shapes
Instructions
- Give the child a heart shape to trace around making two separate hearts on red paper. Click here for heart shape template
- Help the child cut out the two heart shapes with the scissors
- Write the letter H on one heart shape and the letter P on the other
- Give the two hearts to the child while saying the letter names and sounds
- Say the following words individually and ask the child to give you the correct heart for the beginning sound. Return the heart after each word - hat (child hands you the H heart), pig (child hands you the P heart), and continue with words - hole, heart, purple, hot, pot, etc
Simplify
Use only one heart shape at a time when asking the child to give you a heart when you say a word that begins with that letter sound. Give the child the H heart shape first and let the child give the heart back to you as you say a word that begins with the "H" sound - hot, table, say, happen, happy, bank, hope, hi, family, laugh, hat, hill, etc. Remember to give the "H" heart back after each word.
Now use the P heart shape and again let the child give the heart back to you as you say a word that begins with the "P" sound - pop, today, poor, pat, money, paddle, bed, spoon, pit, pot, fork, popcorn, etc. Remember to give the "P" back after each word.
Extend
If the child is comfortable with knowing the beginning sounds of "H and P", see if they can give you the correct heart for the ending or last sound in a word (no easy words end with an H sound) - nap, hop, top, cake, cup, tap, morning, sip, etc.
QUESTIONS FOR CHILD
