Balance (Gross Motor)

Balancing activity

Month 7 · Activity 20 · Physical Activity

Instructions

Physical inactivity can lead to poor motor skills which lead to detrimental effects on cognitive function and academic performance. Balance is an important part of developing good motor skills.  Here are some simple ways to reinforce controlling both static and dynamic balance

  • Stand on the right foot for 10 seconds
  • Stand on the left foot for 10 seconds with eyes closed
  • Stand on the right foot and recite the alphabet
  • Stand on the left foot and count aloud to 10
  • Walk on tiptoe while saying your phone number or address

Simplify

Begin balance activities that are static (maintaining balance while remaining stationary) For example, place both hands on knees and count to 20.  Now lift your left leg while having both hands on knees and count to 20, etc.

Extend

Dynamic balance is maintaining balance and control of the body while it is moving.  Jumping, hopping, skipping, rollerblading, playing on swings and slides, scooter riding, riding a bike, etc. are ways to improve balance.
