Monkey Bread

Using baking to reinforce skills

Month 3 · Activity 16 ·   Cooking

Instructions

  • Waking up in the morning to the smell of fresh baked goods is delightful. The night before put this Monkey Bread together and pop into the oven in the morning for a yummy start to the day.  Remember to have the child see the Monkey Bread in the morning before placing it in the oven to experience the rising of the dough.

Ingredients

24 ounces frozen dinner roll dough (use white/wheat from Rhodes, Pillsbury, etc.)

1 cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons cinnamon

1 (3.4 ounces) package regular butterscotch pudding mix (can try vanilla flavor)

Optional - 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

     1/4 cup raisins

Directions

The night before (8 hours), grease a 9 or 10-inch tube or bundt pan

Melt 1 stick of butter (1/2 cup)

Mix together 1 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon,  and 1 (3.4 ounces) package regular butterscotch pudding mix in a plastic bag.

Dip frozen dough rolls into the butter to coat and place 4 or more rolls at a time into the plastic bag sugar mixture.

Shake to coat and place into tube pan.

When all rolls are coated, pour the remaining ingredients on top of the pan.

If using nuts and raisin, add when the pan is half full and at the end.

  • Leave on the counter overnight.  Cover lightly with wax paper.  Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40  minutes.  Cool for 5 minutes and turn the pan over onto a serving plate.  Best eaten informally with each person pulling pieces of the dough to eat!

Simplify

Mix up ingredients beforehand  and let the child do the shaking of the rolls in the plastic bag and just place in the pan

Extend

This is a fun activity for a child to make and to give as a thank you to a neighbor, school mate, teacher, family member, etc. Chat about the reasons you are thanking this person.
