Good-By, Many, Match, Why

Asking why?

Month 8 · Activity 15 · Target Words

Instructions

Together with a child come up with 6 questions that begin with "Why?"

Together answer the questions

Here are some examples of Why questions?

  1. Why do I have to go to bed every night?
  2. Why do I have to brush my teeth all the time?
  3. Why do you have to go to work every day?
  4. Why am I hungry?
  5. Why is it raining?
  6. Why do I feel sad sometimes?

Simplify

Introduce a child to their brain, an organ located inside their head.  Every time we learn something our brain grows "bigger" by making new connections inside our heads.  When we try to learn something that is difficult to learn, our brain even grows bigger yet.  A skill that makes our brain bigger is to become a good teacher or explainer.  When you teach someone a new skill, your brain expands.  Think of a skill a child can teach: how to play the card game "War", or how to help a younger child learn how to dress themselves. Encourage a child to teach a skill to a family member, neighbor, or friend.

Read/Listen to the book "Rocket Writes A Story" by Tad Hills to encourage thinking.

Extend

Why do we ask questions? Help a child brainstorm to answer that question: to learn something new, to learn more about a subject, to understand what you heard or read, etc.  Instead of using why perhaps ask a child to say "I wonder..." Asking thoughtful questions is an important lifeskill.
