Courage

Listen to the song "America (My Country Tis of Thee)" and use the courage to try something new. Click here to Watch/Listen 

Month 9 · Activity 13 ·   Character Traits  

Instructions

  • Children gain courage by trying new things and not being afraid
  • Ask the child to think of something they would like to try to do - swing, swim, use the climbing wall, walk a balance beam, recite the alphabet, throw a ball, button their coat, asking to play with a group of friends, etc. 
  • Encourage the child to try this new activity and have some degree of success to give them the courage to try again 
  • Being a soldier for our country takes courage
  • Using a globe or map find the United States of America explaining this is the country where we live
  • Listen together to the song, "America (My Country Tis of Thee)" by Aretha Franklin   Click here to Watch/Listen to Drew's Famous Music
  • In the Watch/Listen version  "America (My Country Tis of Thee)" the Pledge of Allegiance is spoken.  Review the words together  "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Simplify

Show the child a picture of a soldier and chat about their role in protecting our country.  Click here for a photo of a soldier

Extend

After the child has found the USA on the globe (map) ask them to find their state and their town.  Show a child the United States flag (a flag picture is second picture at top of the page) and encourage the child to say in his own words what the Pledge of Allegiance means after you recite it for the child. 

QUESTIONS FOR CHILD

Do you like to listen to music and why or why not?

Are all the people who live in the United States of America protected by soldiers?  What is the job of a soldier?
