Shape activity with sandwiches

Instructions Printer-Friendly

When making sandwiches this month ask the following questions...

  • Would you like me to cut your sandwich into 2 rectangles?
  • Would you like me to cut your sandwich into 2 triangles?
  • Would you like me to cut your sandwich into 4 squares?

*Try to make cutting up sandwiches into shapes part of your routine, and a child will quickly learn shapes and the relationship between a whole sandwich and part of a sandwich (fractions)

Simplify

Ask a child if a whole sandwich or a part of a sandwich is what they would like.  As you cut the sandwich into parts, say aloud that you are cutting into a rectangle, triangle, or square.

Extend

What fun for a child to grab a large cookie cutter and make his own shape sandwich. Click here for cookie-cutter ideas
