Time
Learning about a calendar through discussion and observation
Instructions
- Show child a yearly calendar
- Chat and look and say the names of the 12 months. For example, January is our first month and it is often a month with cold weather.
- Chat about the names of the days and how many days in a month. For example, there are seven names of days that are on the calendar - Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Look at the last number on each of the months and say either 28, 29, 30 or 31
- Find today’s date on the calendar
- Begin the routine of daily marking off each day on the calendar
- Find the child’s birthday and highlight on the calendar
- Place calendar in a spot for the child to view daily
- Listen to this song to learn about the months
Simplify
Look at this month on the calendar and point to each number and say aloud with your child
Extend
Have a fun "calendar hunt" with a child. Ask them to find and say a day of the week after giving them a date. What day of the week is March 27, November 28, September 10, April 10, May 22, February 22, July 24, June 10, etc?
QUESTIONS FOR CHILD
Can you tell me what month are cold months and what months are hot months?
Would you like to live someplace that is hot all the time or cold all the time and why?
If you were a photographer for a day, what would you take pictures of and why?

"Investing in high quality pre-kindergarten can make every family in America safer from crime and violence. Law enforcement leaders know that to win the war on crime, we need to be as willing to guarantee our kids space in a pre-kindergarten program as we are to guarantee a criminal a prison cell," said Sanford Newman, president of Fight Crime
