Making Mittens

Developing scissor and drawing skills

Watch Video

  • Using a white sheet of construction paper trace around both of hands of a child keeping fingers together and thumb separate like a mitten
  • Child can decorate by drawing on the mittens or using stickers
  • Help child cut out the mitten shapes using blunt type of scissors (it doesn't have to be perfect!)
  • Put mittens in a spot that shows you care about the work they do (bulletin board, refrigerator, door of room, etc.)


Use thin tissue paper instead of construction paper for drawing the mittens which is easier for cutting.  Also can use with a child, training scissors that use both an adult and a child's hand for cutting. Let child tear around the mitten using his hands


Encourage child to decorate one of the mittens and then make a matching mitten with the other mitten.

As adults, drop-outs have trouble making a living wage, and are at risk of poverty and homelessness

(This fingerplay works as a reminder to a child to be kind in any situation- without saying a word. Just walk hand in front of body to silently signal a child to remember to be kind or use actual sign language for the word kind.)
