Instructions

Find the numeral 1 by looking for page numbers in assorted books, magazines, etc. and have a child point to the numeral 1
Ask the child to hold up one finger, one arm, one leg
Have child cover up one eye and point to one toe

Practice writing the numeral "1" on paper, chalkboard, or dry erase board

Play the "Number 1 Touch Game" by asking the child to touch 1 of an item. For example, ask the child to touch 1 chair, 1 towel, 1 step, 1 rug, 1 table, 1 lamp, 1 window, etc.

Extend

Gather 10 objects (pennies, raisins, etc.) and let the child place 1 object on a table. Next, let them select another object and place next to the first object and ask how many objects - 2.

Review the process by stating that 1 plus 1 equals 2 OR stating that when you have 1 object and add 1 more object - you now have 2 objects.

Now add one more object and state 2 plus 1 equals 3. Always let the child count the number of objects.

Continue to add 1 object at a time until all 10 are placed on the table.
