Letters H and P
ABC mailman activity
Month 8 · Activity 5 · Letters
Instructions
- Gather 14 envelopes (recycled/new envelopes or small sheets of paper)
- Include the two envelopes H and P from Month 8 Activity 4
- Say the names and sounds of previously learned letters and let the child write a letter on each envelope (encourage writing in upper case letters)
S, V, G, Y, O, U, D, M, C, R, B, F, A, E
Depending on their age, some letters may look like scribbles when written. Click here to use an alphabet chart as an aid if needed.
- Place all the lettered envelopes on a table or on the floor
- Ask the child to be the mailman and ask for a letter to be delivered to you. For example, use the letter M - and let the child find the letter M envelope and “deliver” or hand to you. Have a basket or box (an empty cereal box works great) for the child to place the envelope inside if available.
- When all letters are delivered to you, pull out one envelope from the basket/box (child should not see the envelope) and say just the sound of the letter. Ask the child to tell you the name of the letter. When the child correctly says the name of the letter, give him the envelope to hold.
- Select another envelope, saying just the sound, until all the letters are back in the child's hands
Simplify
Review, showing the child the correct formation for each of the letters and write the letter on the envelope. Let the child make a copy of each letter next to the adults on the envelope.
Child can also look at an alphabet chart for guidance in writing the letter.

Extend
When an adult pulls the envelope out of the basket and says the sound of the letter, ask the child to say name of the letter and a word that begins with that sound.
