Making a rectangle with straws

Instructions
- Gather 6 straws, cutting two of them in half
- Using the straws, show how to make a rectangle (a figure whose opposite sides are parallel and are the same size and shape)
- Let child copy the rectangle with his straws
- Show both a vertical and horizontal rectangle
- Encourage the child to make rectangles
- Place straws on a towel to prevent rolling

Simplify
Make a rectangle with the straws on a sheet of paper. Draw lines around the straws. Remove the straws and let the child place straws on top of the drawn lines. Draw a vertical rectangle and a horizontal rectangle for the child to place the straws on top of the lines.
Extend
Encourage a child to go around the home and find items in a rectangle shape.
Write the word rectangle and let the child count number of letters in the word and say the names of the letters.
