Transforming shapes using pipe cleaners/rubber bands

Instructions

  • Use a pipe cleaner to make a circle shape
  • Change the circle into an oval by stretching with fingers
  • Let child change the circle to an oval while saying the shape name
  • Repeat making a circle with a wide rubber band 
  • Next change the rubber circle shape into an oval shape

Simplify

Demonstrate with adult's fingers and pipe cleaners and rubber band how to change from circle to oval. Let child copy your actions with his own pipe cleaner and rubber band.

Extend

Ask child to say the name and sound of the letter that begins the word "oval" (o).  Ask child to say the name and sound of the letter that makes the last sound in the word "oval" (l)
