Love/Forgiveness

Learning to create song/fingerplay lyrics using tune of "Brother John"

Month 4 · Activity 26 ·   Surprise

Instructions

  • Making up songs/fingerplays to known tunes is fun and a good way to share thoughts
  • Use the tune “Brother John” and hand motions or puppets while singing “Do You Love Me?”.  The video demo shows pictures while reciting the song.
  • This made-up song helps with social and emotional development by singing how to display the feeling of love with hugs and kisses

Do you love me? Do you love me?

Yes, I do.  Yes, I do.

Give me hugs and kisses.  Give me hugs and kisses.

I love you. (two kiss sounds)  I love you. (two kiss sounds)

Simplify

Instead of "Do You Love Me?", encourage a child to think of other phrases such as Do You Have Blonde (or color of the child's hair) Hair? or Do You Have Legs? Then proceed with other made-up lyrics to the tune "Brother John"

Do you have blond hair? Do you have blonde hair?

Yes, I do.  Yes, I do.

I like to scrub and wash it.  I like to scrub and wash it.

And brush it too (pretend to brush hair)  And brush it too (pretend to brush hair)

Again, using the same tune try this -

Do you have legs? Do you have legs?

Yes, I do.  Yes, I do.

I have two legs.  I have two legs.

They walk, run, and kick (walk and run in place and kick legs outward)  They walk, run and kick.  (walk and run in place and kick legs outward)

Extend

Some favorite tunes to use to create your own lyrics:  Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; B-I-N-G-O; Row, Row, Row your Boat; You Are My Sunshine; etc. Let the child come up with their own lyrics with help from you as needed. Make an easy slide show on the computer with 3 to 4 pictures and child singing their "new" song can make a very special present for parents or other family members.

QUESTIONS FOR CHILD

If your job was being a singer, what would that mean?

Is there a song you can sing knowing all the words? Can you sing it now?
