Right Handed or Left Handed

Instructions
- Chat with child about how a scientist observes in order to learn
- Have child do the following nine activities while you are the “scientist” doing the observing
- Record for each activity if child used left or right hand or foot
1. Ask child to pick up any small object (Record right or left hand used to pick up)
2. Ask child to pick up a pair of scissors (Record which hand did the picking-up)
3. Ask child to cut piece of paper in half (Record which hand did the cutting)
4. Ask child to write his name on a piece of paper (Record which hand did the writing)
5. Tell child his back has an itch and it needs to be scratched (Record which hand attempted the scratching)
6. Ask child to clap their hands (Record which hand is higher)
7. Ask child to fold his arms in front of his body (Record which forearm is on top)
8. Place a ball in front of child and ask him to kick (Record which leg did the kicking)
9. Ask child to walk up three steps (Record which foot was placed on the first step)
- Talk about the results with child saying you were watching if he used his right hand or left hand more often
- Remind child that there was no right or wrong answer as you were a “scientist” and making observations
