Drawing (Fine Motor)
Drawing and describing a picture
Month 6 · Activity 21 · Physical Activity
Instructions
- Gather crayons and paper and chat about drawing a picture
- Show the best way to hold a crayon (using a crayon encourages finger strength to make a drawing while markers are lighter to use)
- Ask a child to draw a picture of you and encourage the child to take as much time as he wishes
- Have the child describe what he drew when he is finished
- Have the child draw you again and ask him to include a head, body, arms, and legs if these were not included in the first picture
*Remember, they are learning and developing! The child's picture may not appear to have a head, body, legs, etc. Just because their art skills aren't fully developed doesn't mean they didn't draw what you requested. This is why you ask them to point out and verbalize what they've drawn. Most importantly, as an adult, you need to use your imagination!
Simplify
Let the child tell you about what he sees when he looks at you. Encourage him to be specific about the color of eyes, number of ears, the color of lips, number of legs, etc.
Extend
When the child is finished drawing a picture of the adult, ask him to tell a story about the adult in the picture. Give hints using - who, what, when, where, and why if the child needs help in developing an oral story.
QUESTIONS FOR CHILD
