Making a Stop Sign

Measuring and cutting to make octagon

Instructions

  • Fold a red sheet of paper 8 1/2 by 11 in half.  Measure and cut out a 5 1/2 “ square 
  • Fold 5 1/2 “ square in half (look at the photos)
  • Measure 1 1/2 “ in from unfolded top corner and mark. Repeat with a bottom corner
  • Measure 1 1/2 “ down from unfolded corner and mark. Repeat, measuring 1 1’2” up from a bottom corner
  • Draw line to make a triangle on both outside corners and cut 
  • Open up and cut on the fold to make 2 octagons
  • Write with white chalk the word STOP on the octagon

Simplify

An adult can cut out the octagon. Have the child count the number of sides of the octagon stop sign (8).

Extend

Let the child carefully look at the ruler and markings when cutting out the octagon to see how measurements are made. Encourage the child to find a one-inch mark, two-inch mark, etc. on the ruler. Encourage the child to draw lines using the ruler.

Why do we need stop signs on roads?

Can you remember a time when your mom or dad told you to stop? Why did they want you to stop?
