Helping adults prepare children for kindergarten and life.

Star

S is for stars, stickers and a song "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"

Instructions Printer-Friendly

  • Make a large letter S on violet paper with a pencil or marker
  • Give child star-shaped stickers
  • Follow the outline of the letter S with the star stickers placed on the S shape
  • Play song “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” by Ella Jenkins or Watch/Listen here

Simplify

Watch this to learn the star shape

Using a washable marker, draw a star shape on a child's hand.  At different times during the day, ask the child what shape is on his hand. Try to ask the child at least 10 times during the day.

Extend

Go outside at night to watch the stars. Ask if the stars are twinkling? Most stars shine with a steady light but from here on Earth the atmosphere makes stars seem to twinkle.

QUESTIONS FOR CHILD

Why do stars only come out at night? (stars are in the sky both day and night but our bright star the Sun makes it hard to see the dimmer stars during the day)

If you could do anything right now, what would it be?

Materials

  • Song "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" by Ella Jenkins from album Early Early Childhood Songs or Watch/Listen here
  • violet construction paper (or white paper colored w/ violet crayon)
  • star-shaped stickers, self-stick stars  (or create your own with paper & scissors)
