Making Popcorn

Read "Popcorn" and enjoy a popcorn snack

Instructions Printer-Friendly

  • Make a popcorn snack (be aware of possible choking with kernels)
  • Use a saucepan with glass top or popcorn maker where you can see the kernels pop
  • 2 tablespoons of unpopped kernels and 1 teaspoon of oil make about 1 quart of popcorn
  • A child can add kernels and oil before the saucepan is placed on the stove.  ADULT WILL BE IN CHARGE OF POPPING THE CORN
  • Chat about why popcorn can be a healthy snack - fiber, low in calories, etc.
  • Here is a video about how the popcorn kernels pop
  • Why not enjoy a snack of popcorn while reading this month’s book, “Popcorn” by Frank Asch or Read/Listen here
  • Reading at different times of the day introduces a preschooler that books and words are used throughout the day and not just at storytime or bedtime

Simplify

Open a bag of pre-popped popcorn or make a bag of popcorn in the microwave while reading the book "Popcorn"

Extend

The video about popcorn showed the different types of corn and that only one type of corn plant pops!

Explain how the corn plant looks the same from the outside but inside the corn is different - sweet corn, field corn, ornamental corn, and popcorn.

QUESTIONS FOR CHILD

How are people the same on the outside but different in the inside?

What is your favorite snack to eat and why?
